Umred Karhandala Wildlife Sanctuary

General Information & Visitor Overview

Umred Karhandala Wildlife Sanctuary is located approximately 58 km from Nagpur and covers an area of around 189 square kilometers across the Nagpur and Bhandara districts of Maharashtra. The sanctuary consists of teak forests, bamboo vegetation, grasslands, and seasonal water bodies that support a diverse range of flora and fauna.

Wildlife recorded in the sanctuary includes Bengal tigers, leopards, wild dogs, sloth bears, gaurs, sambar deer, and multiple bird species. Over 180 species of resident and migratory birds have been documented, making the area a point of interest for nature observers and researchers.

The sanctuary remains relatively less crowded compared to major national parks, offering quieter safari routes and limited vehicle movement as per forest regulations. Visitor access, safari routes, timings, and permits are regulated by the Maharashtra Forest Department.

The general visiting season is from October to June, subject to weather conditions and forest authority notifications. Activities such as jeep safaris and nature interpretation are conducted strictly under official guidelines.
